Happy Birthday Hip

I made this cake with marshmallow fondant. It was a very messy job but it turned out pretty great if I do say so myself. Hip insisted on having a pink cake with flowers on it for weeks. I am a parent who encourages self expression, ideas, and opinions so I never questioned his choice but about a week out he changed his mind and said he wanted an orange cake.

We had a party with the neighborhood friends and the weather was nice enough to enjoy it outside. In the four times it has rolled around in Hip's life March 19th has been sunny.

The games included a 3-legged treasure hunt. Here Hip is partnered with his BFF. They were so funny we had tears of laughter. Hip kept saying, "I'm done with my foot like this."

And a ring toss. You got to keep the soda you ringed...or in the even no one ringed any everyone got a soda! There was a dance party at the beginning of the party but the only pictures were of PT because the kids dumped out toys instead of danced.

I have a philosophy that it's not a good party without a pinata.

Opening presents. Hip enjoyed some "Cars" toys, a "Lightning McQueen" fishing pole, a puzzle, and a horn for his new bike.

Hip received from us/grandparents: a bike! some play-do toys, Candyland (which he said after opening, "I don't like this"), and a marble toy (because his cousin got one for Christmas and Hip was enchanted with it). He got from his Harris grandparents a dump truck, a monster truck, and a book.

Hip loves a busy day so we kept the festivities going all day. Here were the day's activities: a pancake breakfast with strawberries as requested by Hip himself (made by Daddy), a walk/run to the library with Mom and PT, practicing on his new bike with Mom and then with friends, lunch at his BFF's house (he requested a quesadilla), a movie for quiet time ("How to Train Your Dragon"), party with friends, play outside with friends, and dinner with Mom, Dad, and PT at McDonald's (he got chicken nuggets and chocolate milk).

It's hard to remember the little baby that joined our family three years ago when we look at Hip, as he has grown into such a self-reliant and assured child. Hip continues to have a BIG personality with not a shy bone in his body. He makes new friends with children and adults everywhere we go. He loves to play with friends, loves to be outside, loves trucks and construction equipment and race cars, he loves to read (favorite book right now: anything by Dr. Seuss), loves to be out and about, loves to cook, loves to fix things, loves to help Mommy and Daddy, loves his Daddy more than life itself, loves being a big brother and introduces PT to everyone (usually more than once), is incredibly intelligent, and is fun to be around. He likes to dance, he likes to be involved, he likes to talk, he knows everyone's name that he is around more than five minutes, and he likes to be scheduled and to anticipate things in his day. He also likes to look forward to things and enjoys discussing the next day's plan the night before. Hip is sensitive to emotion and can sense how others are feeling. He can feel sad more often than other children and so Mommy and Daddy pay close attention to the events in Hip's life to make sure he can cope with his feelings. Hip has a lot of energy and is looking forward to starting some sports this year. Hip does not like to be pushed around and likes to decide things for himself. Hip is also polite and kind. He has learned to share and to be a good friend. Hip is very funny too and has learned to strike deals in order to get what he wants.

Hip has had a huge year of change during this last year and we feel his personality has persevered despite all of those changes.

Month 4 & 5

PT making his signature look #2

PT continues to be a happy baby. He has a keen sense of humor and looks for opportunities to laugh and engage with others. There are an average of three hysterical laughing episodes a day. PT coos constantly, and loudly, and sometimes is quite serious in whatever point he is trying to get across.

PT loves Hip. He really loves him. He has a hard time focusing on eating, bathing, getting changed, or Mommy/Daddy when Hip is around.

PT is just about sitting up on his own. He likes to be in a sitting position so he can see the world around him better.

PT loves toys. He enjoys interacting and playing with other people but he also enjoys playing with his toys and can entertain himself for several minutes at a time. PT also loves to chew anything he gets his hands on. Either his hands, his toys, his pacifier, his rag, or someone's fingers are in his mouth nearly all of the time. It is quite funny to watch him attempt to get those pandas in his mouth.

Did I mention PT really likes Hip? Hip likes to read to PT, to play with him, to talk to him, and to make PT laugh.

PT is quick to smile and extraordinarily congenial. PT knows what he wants, however, and does not take "no" or "just a minute" easily. When angry he will grab at his face and head and scratch himself severely. He often draws blood. Lately he has been hooking his ears with his thumb and gauging the inside to the point of bleeding quite a lot; I found him the other day with blood all of the right side of his face from one of these episodes (he was alone for one minute while I said good night to Hip).

PT started rice cereal this month. It has been a huge success and he feels hungry and willing to eat at any point in the day. He has also tried zucchini which he didn't like very much and oatmeal.
PT is working on creeping on his stomach and loves to stand in his Johnny Jump Up and exersaucer.
PT continues to gain weight and grow. five months has gone by so fast because of his happy addition to our family.

Inspirational

An older gentleman told me I was "inspiring" at the gym today as I got off the treadmill. My first reaction was to be flattered but after some thought on the matter I wonder if he thought I am disabled. Isn't that we, as Americans, reserve the word "inspirational" for most of the time?

Snow Day

This is the second time I've been sledding in my life; which makes sense knowing I grew up in the Willamette Valley, Oregon but not much sense knowing I lived on the Wasatch Front, Utah for 13 years.

The local weather authority predicted "the storm of the century" Monday evening, for Wednesday. Local schools and business announced their closures for the following day Tuesday. L's school canceled classes and so he got a day off. We decided to make the most of such a rare occurrence.

We started the day out by digging out of under approximately 10 inches of snow. Our city declared a "snow emergency". The neighborhood stood around outside and scratched our heads over why Michiganders were freaking out so much--storms like this happen in Utah and I was always expected at work/school the next day.

Then we went sledding. Hip was exhilarated to say the least. PT, not so much. It was windy, as it seems to be all of the time in Detroit winter, and even though I had him covered up the wind kept going through his blankets and he couldn't catch his breath (imagine what babies do, how they stop and swallow and stop breathing for a second, when you blow in their face). I ran, quite a distance and through a lot of snow, him back to the car and by the time we got there his lower lip/chin were blue. Once in shelter he started breathing normally again. PT stood for "Poor Thing" that part of the day.

We had lunch at McDonald's and made it home in time to change our clothes, pop some corn and head off to the dollar theatre to watch "Megamind." Hip brought his best friend from the neighborhood and they discussed important matters on the ride there: music, big houses, cars, and construction equipment. PT had a blow out in the middle of the show and there was a homeless man snoring and stinking the place up.

By the time we got home and cleaned up from our day (and L shoveled the driveway again) we were exhausted. But it was that happy kind of exhaustion when you know you just had an one-of-a-kind day; a day you always hope for but rarely get.

By the way, it was not the storm of the century--not even in the top 25 apparently.

And, today the weather authority predicted 2-3 inches of snow and we got 8-10! Uh, where's the disaster/emergency talk now? There was so much snow, in fact, the wise-guy neighbors buried L's car which was parked on the street. L retaliated by tackling them both. I think they are all acting out because of self-conscious feelings related to this picture published in the news:

P.S. "Megamind" is super funny and clever. I loved it.

3 Months

Our PT is three and a half months-old. We wonder, each day, where the time has gone and why we don't take more pictures.

PT continues to be a little angel, delightful in every way. He is quick to smile and laugh. He engages with everyone and anyone, doing so by cooing and chatting with anyone who will listen (even if that is simply his mobile). PT likes to squeal at Mom and enjoys being tickled to the point of laughing hysterically.

He enjoys his brother very much, getting a lot of his daily stimulation from Hip. Hip loves him too and likes to help change PT, talk to him, and watch over him for a few minutes while Mom goes to another room.

PT finds his reflection in the mirror gorgeous and will spend quite a bit of time admiring himself and chatting with himself.

He likes to chew. He grasps some toys, particularly teething rings, and puts them in his mouth. He is anxious to begin eating as he stares longingly at table food and even drools and "air eats" (does the mouth motion of eating) when Mom and Dad eat. He chewed on a cucumber the other night and threw a fit when Mom took it out of his mouth. We know he will be ready to start rice cereal within the next couple of weeks (we don't quite feel ready though).

PT likes to play with toys too, is really interested in his mobile, and likes to watch other people and kids.

PT does not like to be left out and often gets hurt feelings when he is isolated or not involved socially.
PT at his first professional sports game: Detroit Redwings

This month PT has started exercising in his exersaucer, has moved from the bassinet to his crib in his own room, is sleeping 12 hours at night, and has put himself on a 12-hour schedule (something Mom could not be disciplined enough to do): he gets tired each night at 8:00 pm and gets up each morning at 8:00 am. He puts himself to sleep at night (and naps) too.

PT loves to watch television even though we limit his daily viewing. He will crane his body to see the television. He went to his first movie today and loved the quality and sound of the theatre and big screen! Don't worry too much, he also likes to read with Mom, Dad, and Hip.

PT's current likes: eating, Mom, Hip, napping, toys, chewing, smiling, laughing, chatting, television, reading, singing, socializing.

PT's current dislikes: being alone/left out, having to wait to eat, wind (more on that later), tummy time.

The Clouds Have Parted

I joined the YMCA yesterday, on a 50% scholarship. I checked the kids in this morning for FREE child care and worked out, formally, for the first time in almost 6 months; and for the first time non-pregnant in a year. I loved every minute of it except the point where I realized I have lost all of my endurance--I ran at a speed 5 and about died after five minutes. This was coming from a girl who could run endlessly (as long as the IT band didn't act up) a year ago at a much greater pace. Working out has already had a positive impact because instead of being down in the dumps about it I thought, "I am glad I can work up to something again."

When I put in my earbuds and the old songs began to play I felt like 'me' again. I've been missing her.

And, Hip was glad to see me when I went to retrieve him (PT was asleep in a swing) even though he had a great time. I was glad to see him too.

And, I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.

And, It's fun to stay (or work out) at the YMCA.

Two Months Old

This month I continue to grow really fast, continue to be happy and loving, and my personality is beginning to show/develop. My mommy has discovered even though I have serious attitude about some things (being burped, being ignored, and falling asleep on my own) I am very good humored. The other evening when she was burping me I was spitting up and choking quite a bit and I made a noise I thought was funny and so I started laughing.

Speaking of spitting up and choking, I have serious reflux. It has gotten a lot worse and some of my spit up is projectile. My doctor says that as long as I am gaining weight she really does not want to medicate me. And my mommy agrees that even though medication may make her life better (less laundry and clean up) I am not bothered by it other than when I burp right after I eat.

My daddy blessed me this month. My mommy was planning to have me blessed in February but I grew so quickly she was worried I would outgrow my blessing outfit so we had to hurry and get it done. I didn't cry at all! My brother was wondering what me and daddy were doing during church though and kept asking mommy about it so she didn't really get to hear much of my blessing.
I have become interested in toys. I really like this turtle I am playing with in this picture. My mommy thinks it is interesting that this is also the first toy Hip liked. I show a lot of interest in my brother also. I think he is fun to watch. I can't wait until I am big enough to play cars with him.

I have almost outgrown the bassinet in which I have been sleeping. My mommy is anxious about my move to my crib and so we have been practicing taking my naps in it. I don't care for it much but I have become interested in my mobile; my mommy caught me cooing at it today.

I coo a lot. I engage my mommy and daddy by talking to them first.

I love to get my diaper changed. My mommy says this is really funny. If I am uncomfortable after I eat she changes my diaper to get my mind off of it. This is usually just what I need to relax enough to get my burps out. I spend the time, while getting my diaper changed, wiggling, laughing, smiling, and cooing.

Another thing my mommy has picked up is that I get pretty irritable when I am tired. She says she is glad I let her know so she doesn't have to guess.

My mommy found me in my bassinet out of my swaddler today. She said that I might take after my cousin Sambo.

I still like my mommy best out of everyone, but I am not choosy about whom I will smile, which has made me pretty popular at church with the ladies.

Despite My Great Efforts To Convince Them Otherwise...

My family is under the false impression I like:

-Cleaning up after them
-The smell of poop, especially while I am in the shower
-Doing their dishes
-Doing their laundry, especially when they leave pens and lip balm in their pockets
-Listening to them yell, cry, whine, and complain; and beg, and beg, and beg for candy
-Putting their coats away; and shoes, and gloves, and winter hats
-Making them healthy meals which they refuse to eat, or refuse to eat the leftovers
-Seeing lougies in the bathroom sink when I go to brush my teeth
-Skid marks, pee on the bathroom floor, and a sopping wet shower mat
-Saying the same thing 100 times (aka talking to myself/a brick wall)
-Being spit up on, peed on, pooped on, snotted on; being a human paper towel or wash cloth

And my family is under the false impression I do not like:

-Reading for 5+ minutes straight without interruption
-Eating the treats I have spend hundreds of man hours making and baking
-Sleeping for more than four hours straight
-Watching any sort of television programming I may pick out, especially hearing the dialogue
-Getting away from this house all by myself
-My clothes without spit up/snot/pee/poop/someone else's food

All of this is beginning to lead me to believe my family likes:

-An irritable wife/mother
-A wife/mother that tunes out anybody's complaints/crying/whining/yelling/screaming/crying
-A wife/mother who is yelling/screaming/crying

The Incident of The Missionaries and The Cheesecake

We have this really cool missionary serving in our ward right now. He comes from a troubled family background and has an amazing attitude despite this. He and his last companion will have baptized three people this month, which is unprecedented in this area of the country. He was just asked to train a new missionary even though he himself has only been "out" for four months!

So, since I like them so much I invited them to dinner this Wednesday. I always ask them what they want instead of stressing out about it (because I stress out about things like that). He told me he didn't care so much about what for dinner but requested a cheesecake for dessert. Done, I told him, and come hungry.

I researched cheesecake recipes, for a really long time.

I bought the fattening ingredients Monday night despite sub zero temperatures (with the wind chill), a HUGE snow storm, and exhaustion from a long night with the baby. I only slid through one stop light on the way home.

I took out the cheese and the eggs to bring them up to room temperature in plenty of time.

I started making the cheesecake Tuesday morning to give me plenty of time to go slow, to cook it thoroughly, and to chill it appropriately. Mixing the ingredients took about two hours--going slow, making sure to scrape down the bowl and my beaters after each ingredient addition.

When I poured the batter into my spring form pan I wondered how I could wait until the next night to eat it up while noting the amazing smooth consistency. It was perfect, I knew, and I had done a really good job.

I slid the sheet pan, with the spring form pan on top, into the 500 degree oven very carefully. I watched as the top baked into a beautiful golden brown. I turned it halfway through the baking time and began checking the temperature at the end of 100 minutes. It wasn't coming up to temperature and after 5 or so checks I began to worry (my oven does not come up to temperature I've discovered and an oven thermometer has helped greatly). The rack, positioned in the middle of the oven, wasn't gliding out smoothly during each check and so instead of pulling it out I began just sliding the sheet pan out slightly.

While conducting what would be the final check the sheet pan began to teeter. I only had one gloved hand and it was occupied. I watched my cheesecake topple over the side of the rack and spill out on the oven door.

There was no screaming since my children were asleep in their afternoon naps. So I laid on the cold tile kitchen floor with the oven still standing open and cried. And cried and cried and cried. I cried all afternoon. And into the evening.

When L came home I asked him to take Hip to the store to replace the ingredients. I could make another the next day, though that would mean I would be cooking all day long.

While L and Hip were gone there was a knock on the front door. It was the missionaries and there I was in my pregnancy sweatpants, puffed up eyes, and greasy hair holding a fussy baby.

"Uh, are you here to eat?" I asked.

It was discovered there was a miscommunication. They had down Tuesday as meal night. I told them they had to stay because it was probably L's mistake (turns out it was mine! He told me later he thought it was Tuesday and since I am "never" wrong he didn't think to argue with me).

The missionaries were uncomfortable because I was home alone, and Poquito apparently does not count as a suitable chaperon for the missionaries. They left in a hurry. And I felt terrible.

I called L in a frantic and he called them and they waited across the street until he got home and I fed them the enchilada casserole I had made. Unfortunately this is what I fed them the last time they came for dinner. I showed them the pile of cheesecake and explained the disaster. But, since I had more ingredients for a new one and since I still had the ingredients for the dinner I was going to prepare, we agreed they would come back Friday and have the "real" meal. I have another cheesecake in the oven right now. Pray I don't screw this one up, or else I'm gonna give up, permanently.

P.S. We ate the ruined one, and shared with our neighbors (and forced the missionaries to take some) and it was DELICIOUS, like restaurant quality--no kidding.

Happy Holidays 2010

Happy Holidays from The Hemphills

The year Two Thousand Ten will go down in our family history as one that changed nearly every aspect of our lives.

In January we decided that Luke would choose to attend Oakland University for graduate school in Michigan. He was accepted to more prestigious schools but for some reason we felt compelled that OU was the place for us.

In February we found out we were expecting our second child, turns out it’s a boy. Finn Sajovic Hemphill was born in an accidental all-natural delivery October 14th. He was HUGE (at least to me) at 8 lbs 11 oz. He is incredibly sweet and loving.

We sold our house in April, which was like amputating an appendage without anesthesia. We loved that house and have special memories there including our wedding reception, Henry’s baby blessing, and many family gatherings. Leaving our house has left a huge void we don’t expect to be filled any time soon. We know we are mourning it because the holidays don’t feel the same in a new place and we find ourselves thinking and talking about our old home often.

We moved from our beloved home to an interim rental house in May. There we began to prepare ourselves emotionally and physically to move to Detroit, Michigan and to alter our lifestyle significantly. It turns out nothing could have prepared us…

I resigned my position as a youth therapist in Ogden, Utah in July, which was like receiving a lobotomy without anesthesia. Leaving my wonderful job, my co-workers, and my clients was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

In August, few days before we were due to move, Luke was bitten by a Hobo Spider which caused a necrotic response and turned into a staph infection requiring a PICC line to his heart administering antibiotics. This gave us a huge scare and we made us doubt every decision we had made this year thus far. He is fine and an outpouring of support from our friends and families helped us pack up and move 1600 miles across the country.

We arrived to tiny rental home a few days later. We are certainly grateful to be in a home and in a wonderful neighborhood but we are cramped and it is hard for a two year-old to run around and play on hard wood floors (the whole house’s flooring). We spend the remainder of August exploring the Detroit Metropolitan area. It was unbelievably humid which added difficulty to my pregnancy.

Luke began graduate school in nursing (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in September. It has been a very difficult program including coursework and practical work, taking him out of the home a good portion of the day/week. This has been hardest on Henry as they are best friends.

I have spent my time, since moving, organizing our household, raising children, and managing our family’s temporal needs. It is such a change in pace and lifestyle from anything I have ever done that I feel like a fish out of water most of the time.

Henry is a high-energy two and a half year-old. He has struggled with the many changes in our lives including the move (away from friends, family, and all things familiar), adding a new brother (whom he adores and with whom he is wonderful), and the fact that I am around 100% of the time! His personality has blossomed into something that is engaging and enthusiastic. He has made several friends and looks forward to playing with them daily. He enjoys learning new things, cars and trucks and trains, preparing and eating food, books, and music. His favorite thing to do, besides playing with friends, is to go to Costco and eat samples.

And The Winner Is...

I left hints...

1. Poquito--the hints here are a) the lanolin cream (no need for Hip) and b) the Mam pacifier. Hip used the Soothie, when he used one.

2. Hip

3. Poquito--the hint is the Halloween outfit in the top left that he is wearing in the Halloween post.

4. Poquito

5. Hip--the hint is that this is in our old house's office, you can tell if you look really close.

6. Hip
7. Poquito--the hint is the mosaic tile (upper right in photo) in our rental house.

8. Hip

9. Hip
10. Poquito--the double chin and expression are the giveaways here.

Tahsha got them all right! Did you pick up on the clues?
