A few weeks ago my nurse midwife told me to restrict my carbohydrate intake because my unborn baby has a weight problem. Because birthing a humongous baby sounds scary, I have taken her instructions seriously and have cut out most refined sugars. As a result I have been craving everything I am not supposed to have: candy, pop, bread, baked potatoes, chips, crackers, french fries, etc.
Since I have done so well on my At.kins Di.et so far, I decided to indulge and make some homemade bread for baby and I to enjoy. As I pulled out my favorite recipe, which I have halfed in the past, I decided I was going to go for the glory and make the whole four loaves. Usually I rush bread making but I put much care into kneading the dough into just the right consistency, adding flour carefully and slowly. Usually I refuse to follow the recipe's called for three rises and bake after just one; this time I was going to go the distance so I could enjoy each piece of naughty indulgence as it was designed to be enjoyed. During the second rising I checked on it and decided it could use just a bit more time. About 15 minutes later I excitedly headed to the kitchen to punch the dough down and form the loaves for the final rise. I could taste the warm buttery homemade comfort as I advanced toward the kitchen sink where my perfect dough was rising in a bowl in warm water...
That's when I noticed the bowl was tipped over! "OH NO!" is not really what I screamed in horror, but that will do for the sake of appropriateness. L came running into the kitchen to find me dumping the ruined dough into the garbage can. He tried to console me by attempting to cut away the damage and salvage some of the dough for at least one small loaf. It was no use. It was not meant to be. Baby is on diet still. And I am still hungry.

Welcome to the Ski Jungle

On Tuesday I was supposed to be at the new IMC hospital for nursing clinicals. But after a serious debate with myself and two feet of powder, my decision was final. I was off to powder mountain. I ended up hooking up with some fellas skiing and the one guy just hooked me a up with a free cat skiing pass. The cat took me to the top of lightening ridge. But that was not high enough. I ended up hiking James Peak which is about a thousand foot hike to the top (9,422 ft). Mind you that is in some sickly deep powder, skiboots, and a pair of skis over my shoulder. However, the ride was insane. I rode untouched powder for nearly 3,000 vertical feet. Enjoy the pics!
